About Us

Dr. Jan Smith is co-owner of Grove Small Animal Hospital. She is a Tulsa native and a 1980 graduate of

Oklahoma State College of Veterinary Medicine. She has enjoyed caring for the pets of the Grand Lake

area since 1992. Her husband, Donnie is a pharmacist. She is a member of Grove Rotary, and is

Chairman of the Green Up Committee. They have a farm with Peanut the donkey, a few geriatric pet

cattle, Khemazon the horse, and a dog named Hallie. She enjoys spending time with Donnie, going out

to eat, playing pickle ball, riding horses, watching old movies, and traveling. She is a diehard "I Love

Lucy" fan.

Dr. Kathryn Dunaway-Knight (Dunaway) is co-owner. She grew up on a farm near Jay. She is a 1985 OSU

College of Veterinary Medicine graduate and joined GAH in 1992 after practicing in Santa Maria,

California. She and her husband, Ron have three adult children: Brian and wife Becky, Amy and husband

Clay, and Daniel and wife Ana. She has embraced her new role as Gigi to grandchildren Calvin and

Ripley. She is on the Board of Trustees for Christian Veterinary Mission and has traveled to Kenya,

Uganda, Rwanda and Mongolia on Mission Trips since 2008. She is a sunset aficionado, and loves

snapping photos. She enjoys spending time with family, traveling, reading, and shopping for fun items

for Calvin and Ripley. Her exuberant dog, Amber, and Dolly, her sweet cat are both rescues.

Melissa joined our team at Grove Small Animal Hospital in 1998. She started as an Animal Care Assistant

and over the years learned the duties of caring for our patients and boarding guests, receptionist,

surgical assistant and became our Office Manager around 2004. She is still willing and able to do any or

all of those duties when the need arises. She lives with her parrots Sweet Pea and Daisy, her cat Ms.

Kitty, and her Chihuahua Angel. She is an avid crocheter and knitter. She also custom dyes and sells her

varn. She enjoys spending time crafting with her yarns and loves spending time with her 2

grandchildren.

Kelley is from Jay. She spent 20 years as a live-in nanny where she raised 8 children before making a

change and joining our team in 2002. In her time off she enjoys crafting, sewing, cooking, gardening,

reading, and spending time with family including their dog W.D. She also enjoys deer hunting with a

crossbow and helping her husband take care of their 200-acre farm which in 2019 became a rebuilding

process after a tornado destroyed their home, barn, and fencing. Blessedly no one was injured, and the

rebuilding process was a success.

Levi is from Grove and joined our team in 2007. He enjoys helping in many areas including monitoring

the online pharmacy orders, assisting the doctors, working in reception, educating clients, and caring for

boarding dogs and cats. He enjoys helping clients, and has a soft spot for our older clients. His hobbies

include going to concerts, traveling, reading, watching documentaries, spending time with his Chihuahua

Rico, and supporting the Ridgerunners!

Mary Clare graduated from Tahlequah High School in 2010 and then attended NSU also in Tahlequah.

Her work in veterinary medicine started in Owasso. She joined our team in 2018 and later became a

Veterinary Assistant. Her hobbies include crafting, drawing, fishing, Disney and enjoying the outdoors.

She shares her home with her cats, Koshka and Rosie and her dogs, Kota and Hank. She is very artistic

and created the cool pet photo art in our reception area and exam rooms.

Ada joined our team in March of 2022 as a Veterinary Assistant. She was born in Monterey, Mexico and

comes from a medical background where both of her parents are physicians. She attended culinary

school and then decided to become a veterinarian. After working 3 years as a veterinarian in small

animal medicine in Mexico, she decided to move to the U.S. She began working with swine (pigs) in a

breeding facility. In her spare time she enjoys hanging out with her 8-year-old daughter, cooking and

playing with Gracie, her cat. We are happy to have her working with us and to have her help with our

Spanish speaking clients.

Madison was born in Idaho and raised in Oregon where she worked alongside her family in their ranch

business. She is an avid horse/cow woman. Her family moved to Grove in 2017. She worked at an animal

shelter and for a large animal vet before joining our team in 2020. When she is not working, she enjoys,

gardening, hunting, and attending cattle shows. She and her husband Jake and fur child Remington love

to go rock climbing in their RZR. They have started their own little farm with chickens, ducks, and a

miniature pig named Nash.

Lois has a B.S. in Animal Science from Colorado State University and has worked in veterinary medicine

since 1993. She has been on our team since 2016 after moving here from Virginia. She has worked

primarily caring for boarding guests and patients. Although she officially retired in November2022, she is

happy to fill in as receptionist when needed. Lois spends most of her time keeping track of her husband,

5 dogs, 4 cats and 20 chickens. She spends her spare time gardening, reading, and quilting.

Chloe joined our team in 2020 while she was still a student at Fairland High School. She enjoys caring for

our boarding guests and patients. She is a student at NEO A&M College studying psychology. She has a

passion for caring for animals and people, and loves being able to be around all the cute dogs and cats.

A fun fact is that Chloe's mother, Missy worked with us at Grove Small Animal Hospital when she was a

high school and college student, too.

Stacy is a local boy from Jay who was raised on a family farm where he did the usual farm chores. During

his time on the farm, he developed a passion for animals. He enjoyed training and showing horses in 4-H

Club. After graduation from Jay High School, he became a hairstylist. He left that profession after 14

years to follow his true passion of working with animals in the veterinary medicine field in 2018. He has

3 dogs, 2 foster dogs and a Bearded Dragon. He is happy to be here, and has been caring for patients

and boarding guests since 2022.
